About Me

San Francisco Eating Disorders Trauma Couples Individuals Therapist Shannon Valentine, MFTThere are so many wonderful therapists to choose from these days. The good news is that you have many options, but that also makes it tough to sift through and find the right therapist for you.

Here are a few things to know about me to help you in your decision-making process:

  • I work collaboratively.
I am personable and interactive.  I strongly believe in the efficacy of listening and I also love to work together, interact, and share insights and ideas.
  • I like to explore the past and I also work in the here and now.
There is so much to be gained from truly understanding one’s past and how you developed into the person you are today.  And it is also empowering to work in the present to determine how you want to live your life now.
  • I work with the whole person.
Thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, imagination, dreams, personalities, parts you have been keeping in the shadows, and spirituality (if applicable).  Whichever parts you choose to bring to therapy… all are welcome.
  • The way I work is unique to you.
Based on your individual needs, preferences and personality.  I am trained in many different modalities — Psychodynamic, Relational, Gestalt, Cognitive Behavioral, Mindfulness, Couples, EMDR and Transpersonal.  All of these modalities inform my work in an integrated fashion.
  • I am a qualified Psychotherapist.
I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and received my Masters in Integral Counseling Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco.  I have been working with Individuals, Couples and Groups since 2006.
  • I am a trained Couples Therapist.
Couples therapy is quite different than individual therapy and requires specific therapeutic skills and training in order to be effective.  In addition to my traditional educational background and training, I completed a year-long Couples Therapy Training with the Couples Institute in Menlo Park.
  • I have a specialty in Eating Disorders.
I have a passion for working with clients who are struggling with any and all types of food, weight, body and self-esteem issues.  I have co-facilitated groups at Beyond Hunger and am working toward an Eating Disorder Certification from UC Berkeley.
  • I am a trained EMDR trauma therapist.
I have found this modality incredibly effective and healing with chronic and acute trauma.  EMDR is a proven method and it is not uncommon for people to experience symptom relief after the very first session
  • I am also a trained Personal and Corporate Coach.
Prior to becoming a psychotherapist, I was trained as a Life Coach from The Coaches Training Institute in San Rafael.  Coaching can be a powerful modality for people wanting to move forward in their lives.   I am able to integrate coaching practices and tools for  individuals looking for that type of support.
  • I have 15 years of Corporate Marketing and Management experience.
Prior to becoming a psychotherapist, I worked in marketing for 15 years at companies such as Levi’s and Foote, Cone & Belding Advertising.  I have a solid understanding and working knowledge of that world and can offer an empathic understanding to individuals who want to work on professional issues in therapy.
